Here we go... watch out, this is a long one. Part 1:

First of all, I love your comic. It is way more sketchy than others - eh, sounds awful, but bear with me: I mean, I read a lot of webcomics, and many are more artistically advanced, but yours is so very expressive.
And the development is nice, art-wise; the shading now is something else entirely than in the beginning, the bodies and movements look more organic, and, very apparent at the first page of chapter 7, your working with perspective has advanced greatly.
I especially loved your coloring / style in that flashback http://thebackobeyond.thecomicseries.com/comics/134/ and the dramatic cover of chapter 6. And sometimes just lovely little details like the pictures of Seb's sisters in the background: http://thebackobeyond.thecomicseries.com/comics/95/

Little critic though: One thing that bothers me is the way you draw books when Seb reads. With the angle, they look almost shut, makes me wonder how he can read anything in them at all.

Part 2:

The story is intriguing, I'm looking forward to more, but most of all I love the characters. Most of all Nate, he's such an endearing guy, and such a dork. For some reason I love that he knits. And his ability to fit his foot into his mouth. And that he always wants the best, even wants to make his mam proud despite his own fears.
I'm curious to learn more about him. By now, I'm kinda expecting him to grow gills or something. Also curious about Annie's connection to Seb and his father; how do they even know each other? And I'm dying to learn more about Stanza, too. For now, I can only tell that she looks really beautiful.

Another question I have: Are there female crew members? I thought not, but with a fantasy setting and with how some of the background characters look, it's hard to tell.
Also this white-haired navigator kid who just tried to hold Finley back from beating up Nate; I thought that person looked like Finley's girlfriend from his backstory, Twigs?

Part 3:

I'm really interested in Daniel (Danny?), too. On the one hand, he seems to be a decent guy, having saved Nate during the attack on the ship. On the other, he's the (only?) friend of the captain, who's a bit of a jerk, while he's also obviously close to Sawbones, who's like the human equivalent of a sweet, fluffy chocolate pie.

I'm kinda wondering why Sawbones looks so young in comparison to Danny. Didn't you say they were childhood friends? Danny looks visibly older than Nate, Seb, and Finley, but Sawbones I thought was rather their age. Maybe he has less wrinkles because he isn't such a frowner, heh.
Sawbones' goofy twists on English are great, btw. From "dearly department" to "winding your legs"; I love that stuff.
What I also love is the rugged cat. In my opinion, the presence of a cat is always a plus for any story.

Who was your inspiration for the captain? You mentioned a "despicable, charismatic characters from a series", that made me curious...?

Party 4:

And last but not least, the current situation. Aw, what a shame that Seb is sober again. I found it sorta funny how he was quietly suffering around in the background while Nate and Sawbones talked. And Sawbones giving him a pet on the head. He's such a sweetie!
I'm afraid this here will not end well. The crew's already after Nate and Seb; if the Captain now intervenes, they'll just be the more pissed for them being telltales.

And... that's it for now. Should be enough. Sorry, I just had a few things collected that I wanted to say about all of this. Next comment will be less babbly, promise. I'll stay around and tuned; that comic is really great. Keep up the good work!

Wow! Thank you so much for all your lovely feedback! I'm glad you're enjoying the comic. :3

It's okay, I don't think what you've said sounds awful at all. I'm very aware I didn't start from the strongest place artistically, and I've still got a long way to go. Still, I'm glad that the progress is as noticeable as it is! And that you liked the colouring in the second interlude, I was really happy with how it came out.

Also, it's good you mentioned that thing about the books. There's at least one more scene coming up with reading, so it's helpful to know that's something I need to pay particular attention to.

It's so great you like the characters, and what you said about Nate makes me so happy! That's exactly how I hoped he'd come across, so yeah, that's awesome. The connection between Annie and Seb's dad is something I probably won't get to in this comic (and I haven't quite hashed it out in my head just yet either) but I know at least that it would involve Annie's father. There are a lot of things I'd love to do after Beyond, and one of those would be a prequel that would feature more of those characters. There'd be a lot more Stanza too, though I can at least promise there'll be some answers with her later on in this story.

You're right, that character is Twigs, and I guess that answers your other question too. There are some female crew members, but they can't be open about that. Most of the pirates wouldn't actually care, but the captain still holds on to some ideas and superstitions from his earlier years.

Ah, Daniel! I'm looking forward to where his character's going to go. I only hope I can pull it off well enough. Yup, he and Sawbones were friends as kids. There are a few years between them, though Sawbones is supposed to be a little over thirty years old. I've always thought of Sawbones as someone who seemed young for their age, though I see where you're coming from. If it's confusing, I could have a think on ways to make Sawbones look a bit older. Something to think about for sure.

That character was actually Negan from the walking dead. I'm not sure if the captain actually did end up all that similar to him (he certainly doesn't swear as much) But that's where the inspiration came from, nontheless.

Heheheh, I'll admit, I was enjoying showing Seb in a rather different state to his usual '-_-'! You're right that this isn't going to help his and Nate's situation. Should be... Fun.

Thank you so much for your comments, no problem at all! Thanks so much for reading. :3

Well, that gives me at least one more question: With Sawbones being the medic in charge, shouldn't he know that Twigs is a Polly Oliver? He referred to the navigator as "he", back here: http://thebackobeyond.thecomicseries.com/comics/76/ Or is he covering up?
And if you're not telling more about Mr. Worthington and Annie knowing each other, that leaves me hanging on why did he think it was safe to tell and show Annie everything about the spring and the amulet...? Am I fishing in spoiler waters here?

Sawbones does know about Twigs, yes. That was a cover up.

Well I'll be honest, people talking too much about the spring and amulet was how the pirates found out about it all in the first place. A lot of people should've been more careful than they were, and that would probably include Mr Worthington himself. I am still working on how exactly they know each other, but there is also at least a bit of trust there too.

Ah, I see. Thanks a lot for being so patient with my questions ^^

In the Disney Peter Pan movie, Captain Hook shot a member of his crew for singing too loud.
If Captain Colton is of a similar temper, that does not bode well for Finlay...

And he was a Disney character! XD

Good news for Finn though, he wasn't the one who scarred Seb. He just beat Nate up, but The Captain doesn't care about him...

Yep I had that feeling. There was a moment of "oh crap what's going to happen to Blue?!" but he didn't do anything to Seb and just roughed up Nate a bit. Went back a few pages to double check lol

But that is pretty much pirate life, heh. Or the crew going at each other after extended periods of time and then you either can take the beating or you can beat somebody up.
But ya, he never was a part of the crew. Actually... The captain has problems with his people but most of the crew seem way too young to be a part of it. I suppose they were told and simply went with it since there needs to be SOME reason they are sailing with the captain in the first place. Hm.

Indeed! ¬w¬

Oh yeah for sure. They all have their own reasons. None of them were with him when all that stuff happened, but a lot of them can probably relate and have similar sentiments.
