How It Should Have Ended: The Little Mermaid, by Nate Jones

To be fair, Disney are not the only ones who find Andersen's tales morbid and want a better ending for them. Terry Pratchett was outraged to find that the ending of "The little Match Girl" was supposed to be a happy one.

Sorry, this reply was for Micrraptor. Don't know what the comment section did there.

Disney also gave a happier ending to The Hunchback of Notre Dame. (After all, everyone friggin' dies at end of the original story...)

Well, Phoebus doesn't die in the original story. He's got it worse: He gets married.

Person who knows Andersen's original story: "That's not the ending I recall."
Walt Disney Studios: "I like mine better."

Seriously, why should a fisherman be troubled by a partner who's living in the sea? Duh. Nate's ending is not just happier, it also makes sense.

Also, cuddles. This page makes me happy.

Sometimes the simplest answer is the one that makes the most sense... And thanks!

D'aww. Sailors belong at sea. Best place to be if you want to see yours.

Yep! It's wrong to expect a creature of the sea to give everything up to stay on land forever.

Is this how fanfiction was invented? LMAO!
But ya. His only choice is now to write something of his own and something he will enjoy more :D

Just catching up with The Back O Beyond - really enjoyed the new pages! Also, I'm a fan of happy endings, too, so I totally share Nate's impulse here (... I still can't quite forgive Hans Christian Anderson for making me feel slightly sorry for my Christmas tree every year >:( )

Hey, thanks! Now you've made me want to check that story out, haha I'm not sure I'm familiar with it!
