Seb's not trying to be rude, he doesn't actually know any polite or common usage words for it besides homosexual, which would sound pretty clinical in this context.

I've had to come to a bit of a compromise in this comic and decided that 'queer' is in use with its modern meaning, though 'gay' isn't. Queer sounds slightly more suitable (if you squint a bit) and I need at least one short and easily recognisable word. Here it's used more as a noun though.

It wouldn't have been "queer", since that originally meant "odd" or "strange".
Certainly not "gay". That still meant "happy" or light-hearted in my father's day.
Maybe "nancy-boy" was in use?
