Sadly, it's not good! Public schooling doesn't really exist yet and whilst kids with money might have a tutor or governess, most kids would learn literacy and numeracy from someone they know or on the job, if at all.
Nate's pretty good with numbers, but he can't read.
When you realize back then this was actually a very useful skill to have. Just as simply counting numbers, haha.
He should stop though. Straining your eyes further like this is not exactly a good thing ;)
Can't believe I missed to comment through the entire week of updates... RL -.-
Gotta say, I loved both interactions, Finlay with Baines and then with Twigs.
Baines and Finlay in comparison - while I find Finlay more annoying with his bias, I think I can sympathize more easily with him. At least he's a prick for human reasons. Baines considering hurting and killing people for sheer pragmatism... kinda gives me the creeps.
But seeing Finlay planning future advetures with Twigs was really heartwarming. I do hope a little bit that things will work out for them.
And now back to these two nerds. Sebastian, poor boy. I've been wearng glasses ever since I was 5, and one day I went to school without them because I was late in the morning and couldn't find them, and I had to ask a classmate to read out to me the writing on the blackboard... ugh.
I'm glad you enjoyed the interactions! They were a blast to write, I really wanted to show a little more of how those characters think, since early on there wasn't a whole lot of that. It was great seeing your takes on this!
And aw man, that sounds like a nightmare D: I get by alright without mine for the most part, my vision seemed to get worse slowly over a couple of years, so it took me a while to realise "Hey. I can't read any of these signs around me. What's up with that??" XD
